Internships in bio fuel processing in Honduras
October 30th, 2008
FACT Foundation, located at the University grounds (MMP 1.22) works together with organizations in developing countries on energy supply for local, rural inhabitants through use of bio fuels. One of the organizations, located in Honduras, is the Social Trade Organisation (STRO) originating from the Netherlands. STRO is looking for students wanting to execute an internship in Honduras.
Background
Social TRade Organisation, STRO is a Research & Development network working in the field of Local Economic Development. The Gota Verde project in Yoro, Honduras, started in January 2007 and aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of small-scale biofuel production. The production chain covered by the project runs from the establishment of oil crop plantations until the local marketing of biofuel and its subproducts. Center of this chain is a farmer-owned enterprise (BYSA).
At the moment, some 400 ha of oil crops have been established (mainly jatropha and to a lesser extent castor bean, sesame, soya, canola and sunflower). BYSA produces some 550 ltr per month of biodiesel with a locally build biodiesel processor, two presses and two types of dehullers. All equipments require improvement. Experiments are conducted regarding the production of fodder concentrate for cattle, organic fertilizer and biogas.
The Gota Verde office is located in the small city of Yoro in northern Honduras and is staffed by 10 specialists, mainly agronomists. For more information see also: www.gotaverde.org (in Spanish, soon in English) and www.strohalm.nl/hondurasppo (in Dutch).
Internships
There are several possibilities for research, specifically in byproducts of the bio fuel production chain. For example: follow-up research needs to be executed on use of glycerine for biogas and soap production. This research was started last summer by a student from Sustainable Energy Technology (SET).
To obtain a clear view on the feasibility of this part of the project we are also looking for students able to execute financial feasibility studies to compare the different byproducts. Definite subject of research will be determined in co operation between student and STRO.
