New report on biobutanol

January 17th, 2012

Biobutanol is a biofuel that can be produced by fermentation of biomass. With the recent progress made on economic butanol production from biomass and the suitability of butanol as a clean transport fuel, FACT foundation has decided to prepare a small overview study on the state of the art of butanol and the potential of butanol for developing countries.

It was found that lignocellulosic biomass (woody biomass) represents a large potential source in developing countries for fermentation to acetone, butanol and ethanol (ABE). However current fermentation processes are not optimised for lignocellulose as feedstock material. Clean, effective and affordable biomass pretreatment of lignocellulosic feedstocks is therefore important in order to achieve substantial butanol conversion rates, that are viable.

FACT is interested to get feed-back on the report that was prepared with Rob Janssens (). So please let us know if you work on this topic or see new possibilities? ()
